Tips for Emailing Digital Photos

Runners love to see pictures of themselves performing which is why we started our WG Runners photo sites several years ago. They are also a great way to share the events with friends or family who could not be present. Below are some tips for emailing photos with both Windows and AOL. Whether or not you are an accomplished digital photographer or just having fun, we can't post them if you don't send them so please share your photos. Good luck and if you have any questions please feel free to email.

Today's digital cameras take pictures which are extremely large and sometimes difficult to email as email systems often restrict the total size of files that can be sent. There are many programs, often included in your camera software to reduce the size of files for sharing via email. Photos posted on our site are relatively small, therefore an ideal size to email is 1024x768 which will allow many pictures to be sent at once and plenty of resolution for editing. Windows XP and Outlook express can automatically reduce your photos to this size for ease in emailing. See the instructions below but once again, don't be intimidated, please send them any way you can.

Emailing Pictures With Windows XP and Outlook Express

Locate the directory which holds your downloaded pictures. Click on the picture, or hold down the ctrl button and click on the pictures you want to send. Then you can send the pictures to Outlook Express.

On the left side of your screen you should see some options. Choose "Email the selected items" under the "File and Folder Tasks" heading.

The files and folders task box.

You will get a dialog box where you can again select options. The screenshot below shows that "Make all my pictures smaller" option is selected. Clicking on the "Show more options…" link will expand the dialog box to include different file sizes you can select. We prefer the Large 1024x768 size option.  Clicking the "OK" button will start the process of attaching your files to an email. It will open your default email program and attach them to a new email. You will see a message that your files have been attached and are ready to send. Fill in the rest of the email information and send your email! (Use the "Keep the original sizes" option if your pictures are already the correct size.)

The Send Pictures Via Email dialog box. Your email program will open when you click OK.

This will automatically attach your pictures in a perfect emailing size to a blank email and then you can address it and send it.

Emailing Photos with AOL Email

There are 2 ways to send photos by AOL Email, the Add a file option makes the photo easier to work with for editing, but either way is fine, again the most important thing is to share the photos.

Attach Multiple Files to Your E-mail

If you attach multiple files, they will be zipped (compressed) into a single file by the AOLŪ software before they are sent out. The recipient of your e-mail will need to unzip the files after downloading them. If the recipient is signed on to the AOL or CompuServeŪ service, the files will be unzipped automatically after sign off or upon download. If the recipient of your mail uses a different Internet Service Provider, they may need special software to unzip or decompress the files before viewing or using them.

To attach multiple files to your e-mail in any version of AOL 9.0:
1. On the AOL toolbar, click the Write icon.
2. Click the Attach File button.
3. Navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to attach.
4. Hold down the CTRL key, then click each item you want to select.

Note: Hold down the Shift key, then click two items not next to each other to select all items in between.

5. When you have finished, click the Open button.

Note: To detach files, click the Detach File button, click the file you want to detach to highlight it, then click the Detach button.

6. Address and write the mail, ensure the file being sent is not open, then click the Send Now or Send Later button.

To attach multiple files to your e-mail in AOL 8.0 Plus or earlier or AOL for Mac OS X:
1. On the AOL toolbar, click the Write icon.
2. Click the Attachments button.
3. Click the Attach button.
